Answer:

If your companion doesn't consume Nectar Juice, it won't provide any bonuses, and it won't earn XP either. Companions will enter "resting" mode. You'll need to craft Nectar Juice on the main sim or purchase ready-made Nectar Juice from the Nectar Juice vendors on the main sim.
